Looking at a 92 F350 Turbo 7.3 IDI 2wd on CL
It has 170k mi on it and looks pretty nice. Gets regular oil changes the owner says and gets 15-20 mpg. Is this a good diesel truck to get for hauling? Does the 7.3 idi turbo have any issues? He says I will need to plug in block heater to get it to start in cold weather...thinks maybe needs new glow plugs. I wonder if low compression instead but he says not. He will take $3200 for it.

That might be a bit high for a 25 yr old 2wd truck but if it's rust free and well kept,I can see it.I don't think I'd pay it but if he kept it good and it's in real nice shape,I don't see how or why he would let it go for less either so.
When it comes to IDI trucks,in most cases, you want to spend your time focusing on the rest of the truck. The engine should be good for at least, another issue free,150k miles.

Hi If you hear clicking from the glow plug relay you will probably have two or more glowplugs burnt out...I just went through replacing all glow plugs and it appears the previous owner skipped the two hardest one's to replace...especially the one under the turbo.
TJC transport was a great help at getting me through replacing them all!
I personally think the IDI turbo is the way to go (mine is the odd-ball 94 IDI factory turbo year)
I actually had a newer 7.3 powerstroke got rid of it and went to the older model 7.3 IDI because of more simplicity and cheaper parts.
The 7.3 is a good engine for hauling, as long as the rear end ratio meets your needs and the truck itself is made to haul what you're wanting to do, the engine will do it.

I did a little research and the factory put a Garrett turbo on in 92.5. It was supposedly mostly to maintain HP at high altitude. Also they said the "downpipe" was very restrictive and the only thing holding it back from much better HP #'s.

OK. Thanks...
I like the 429's also...Have three cars (2 projects 1 running) with the CJ's and an SCJ in the running one. It's a 70 Torino Cobra drag pac. The two projects are a 71 GT 4-sp Ranchero and a 71 GT 4-sp Shaker Torino. I was looking at a 66 Thunderbird yesterday for $2000. Pretty good looking car except for a little rust in a rear quarter.

Not a lot. I own two at the moment, an Isuzu 2.2 Pup and a GMC 6.2 1 ton. I've never had to do a thing to either one but havn't driven them much either. I seem to collect lots of rigs and then don't sell them
