My 94 E150 club wagon with about 225,000 miles on it, just past smog recently (has never failed) and I just had the trans. rebuilt.
The engine seems to still run strong with no noticeable noises. A few years ago I replaced the radiator and all hoses, ICM, Idle air valve, cap rotor, ignition coil, Fixed the computer, and new PCV valve. The plugs and wires were changed about 5 years ago,
I just installed 2 new front tires, oil change and front end alignment done last week.
It nees new balljoints, all bushing up front and It needs springs and leaf in the back.
I am going to put about $500 more dollars into it doing the balljoints and another maybe $600 to do all the springs.
This is my daily driver and my only transportation, I didnt have a choice doing the tranmission rebuild because it went out at the wrong time.
I figure after I do the balljoints and springs, if I get another 2 years without any other major issue Ill be happy.
Am I crazy for sinking more money into it with this many miles on it
if you need to ask if you are crazy, the answer is a definite yes.
as far as "sinking money into a paid for vehicle"
you need to ask yourself if you want to keep this one or make payments on a new one.
i will always go with keeping a good vehicle running over payments any day.
i tell the kids to plan on spending $1000 per year on a vehicle.
now, which will be cheaper. a new one, or an old one?
99.9% of the time the old paid off vehicle will cost less per year to maintain and keep in good running condition.
Thanks for the replies. I definately do not want a new vehicle with payments.
I am going to start saving up for an engine so I have the money on hand when that comes around.
$100 for 1000 miles is the going rate at which a used vehicle pays you back. since I work out of my home office and no longer commute, my goto vehicle is always auction vechicles. estate auctions...major deals to be had. last car: 99 lesabre, 1200 new, 800 in parts, 26000 miles, sold for 1000. hard to beat that!
current 03 deville with 68 K, 3400 paid, 600 in tires brakes and stuff, 30000 miles so far...its a cycle you can win at.
Yea, after the balloints, sway bar bushings, leaf and coil springs and, brake booster (should probably do MC at same time) It should be good for a while.
The main thing I am worried about is something like A bad head gasket.
Just gotta take it week by week.
