Wrong side to Flair side

Both are 8' beds. Wrong side is a 65 4x4 F100 with 120 wheel base. Flair side is currently a trailer on frame. Bonus it has a 5 lug D60.2 or 3 under it.

Were the 8' flair sides used on a 120 wheel base like my 65 4x4?

Yes. But without knowing what year the bed is and what truck it came from, you won't know for sure unless you measure it to check the wheelbase. In example, a 1965 2wd truck with an 8' bed would have had a 129" WB.

That's what I was wondering about. It has the angled bed rails. Not sure what year those were made flat for a topper. In the photos it doesn't have the lift blocks between the springs and axle that the 4x4's do but those could have been removed too.

Does anyone know how the box was changed between the 4x and 4x flare side to accommodate the 129 and 120 WB? I think these boxes have and inner fender so moving the outer fender wouldn't be all that's needed.

The angled box rails got flattened out in 77 1/2 from what I can tell. On the longbox flareside yes there is an inner wheel well of sorts but if I recall it is stamped into the box side and is not removable. I love the look of a flareside but I do not think the longbox parts are reproduced. For your interest the longbox flareside is also wider than a shortbox and therefore the tailgates and bulk heads will not interchange. I know nothing about 4x4 stuff so I cannot help with mounting stuff to the frame.

Heres a couple photos of what I'm looking at. It's got a d60 5 lug axle under it as well. As near as I can figure it started life as a 2 Wheel drive truck. Is it unreasonable to think I can move the fenders forward to use this trailer on a 4 x 4 with 120 inch wheelbase

Based on looking at pictures on the internet it appears as though it should fit. The rear wheels will appear forward in the wheel well as per the factory.

I was looking at pictures of Flair sides too. It appears to me the 4x bed fenders are centered on the middle support brace. Looking at the photo I posted above you can see the fender is mounted a bit rear from that brace. It's fender needs some work but I'm thinking if I used this bed maybe moving my rear axle back to a 129" WB position would be easier. Not factory but it would retain the cab steps and probably tow better.

I think moving the axle back would be the best option especially given you want it to be a tow vehicle.

The seller did tell me the bed side walls have a wheel well bulge that appears centers on the side wall. He thought that if I moved the fenders forward and centered them over that bulge they would move about 8" forward. Just about at a 120" WB sounds like. I'm guessing Ford used the same sidewall stamping for both the 120" 4wd and 129 2wd long bed trucks.

If that's the case I change my recommendation
Move the fenders, weld up the extra holes, shorten the steps and you should be pretty much good to go.

After looking at the two pics, a good comparison point is the middle stake pocket. On the top 2whl dr pic it is clearly forward of the wheel well centre line. On the bottom 4x4 pic it is centered.

If you move the fenders you will lose the steps. You'll either have to shorten them or find the ones that match.

1957/76 F100/250 & 1973/76 F350 8' Flareside beds will interchange, but the bed mounting holes will be different due to the different wheelbases.

1957/72 F350's came with a 9' Express Flareside Bed.

Thanks Bill, I think the steps would be different as well with the different wheelbasses right? Do you know what steps came on what trucks? If I need to change steps and move the fenders for a different wheelbase are they available anywhere?

I'd also be interested in seeing an exploded view of these beds and what sort of supporting braces they had and how things mounted to the frame.
