Considering my first diesel (2010) questions

Long story short im entertaining the idea of a
2010 f250"><span style=2010 f250" /> 2010 f250">2010 f250
with roughly 116k miles. This will be my daily driver and used for occasional towing. Yes I dont really need a 250 as I could get away with a 150 but my opinion is moe power moe better.

What advice can you all give me? Ive read that most of the issues found in the early 6.4s (2008 ish) were taken care of. Is that really the case? What kind of reliability can be expected from this power plant? Of course this is a used purchase so I dont think I will be able to get reliable service records from the previous owner. Ive read that I should get an OASIS report and am seeking out that as we speak. What can I check or ask the dealer to check prior to my purchase ? During my research ive ran across powerstrokehelp.com and watched a few videos of his regarding the 6.4. He doesnt seem to have a very good opinion of this engine.

Im not set on a 6.4 or anything it just seems the 2008 - 2010 are whats in my budget. I do occasionaly see a 2011 but its rare. Would I be better to hold off for a 6.7 ?? Seems ive read a lot about them being very reliable engines.

Just looking for some advice on a first diesel purchase.

Short answer.....hold off for a 2012+ year model 6.7........MUCH better odds of getting a reliable engine. The 6.4 can be a money pit.

The first run 2011's had some valve issues........a lot of them did not, but the odds are a lot better with a 2012+. Just my opinion.

IMHO I would take Powerstrokehelp.com with a grain of salt. While he does have a lot of knowledge I wouldn't take it as gospel without corroborating it with another source.

As for the OASIS I don't think you can get that unless you own the vehicle. You might get a dealership service department to give you one if you walk in with the VIN number but I was not able to when I bought mine. I had to get someone from the lot where I was buying my truck from to call and get it for me.

I have no experience with the 6.4L except what I've heard about it. It was as short run so there's not that many out there (relatively speaking). I recommend you post this question in the 6.4L diesel forum. While you may not get a completely objective answer you should be able to find out what kinds of issues, maintenance, and repairs you can expect and how much that's going to cost you.

After you weigh the costs and what's out there it boils down to your preference. I had a friend that had a 2010 6.4L F-250 and he loved it. It puts my '03 to shame but I love my truck. I'm sure there's plenty of people that think I'm crazy to keep pumping money into my aging 7.3L but that's my choice. It may not be the smartest one but it is my choice to make. In the end do what makes you and your wallet happy.

I had a 2010 6.4, now I have a 99 7.3. As previously said the 6.4 is a very expensive truck to own. They are strong, fast and plenty of power but allot of the work I could do on my 7.3, involved removing the cab from the chassis on the 6.4. No can do in my driveway, and service shops are expensive.
