I have noticed some recent problem with my F150 (stock 1993, 4.9L with 180000 miles) that as yet I have not been able to solve. The problem arises when the truck is under load (going uphill or towing) and generally after being run at high speed (65+) for some time. Suddenly the truck will lose power, sputter and occasionally backfire. The engine light will come on some times during this and quite often I have to pull off the road to let it idle for some time, less I get run over by a fully loaded semi. Turning off overdrive seems to alleviate some of the problem.
At first I thought it was missing, but now I am not convinced that is the problem. I have replaced EGR valve and sensor, plugs and wires, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor to no avail. Running the truck with vacuum line to EGR disconnected continues to show the problem. I haven't pulled the codes yet from the self-diagnostic (BTW, my shop manual doesn't have a diagram for the self-diagnostic pack. Can anyone tell me where to find it?).
Any suggestions about further tests or replacements would be much appreciated.
I bet you have a blown head gasket, these 6 cyl are noted for gasket blown between 2 cyl. guess what? then you loose 2 cylinders which is 1/3 of your engine. The "bridge" between the 2 is the smallest area which goes first. With that many miles and running for 65+ for a while gets everything good'n hot.
easy to check- get a compression gage and check each cyl., with all plugs removed, preferably while its still warm. spin over 2-3 times. I'd almost bet on it.....at least the 6 is easier I think to pull a head.... pr1@ipa.net
I have the same exact problem with my '94 5.0 F150. If you look back on the next page there is some info. I haven't yet solved the problem. It only happens when towing.
