The truck has less than 2300 miles.2.7L EcoBoost. The soot build on the tail pipe worries me because my truck falls into the build date for TSB 17-2077. There is also a miss or stumble on the engine at idle. its very slight but I know its was not there when I picked the truck up. Also driving on the highway there are big misses like I am hitting a gust of wind. I know its not wind. no trees or weeds are blowing in the wind. Anyone else have a tailpipe that looks like this

Really? I don't have many at the house to compare it to but my sons 2015 focus and the wife's 2015 edge still look like metal on the inside. not full of powdery black soot. Like I said the truck only has 2300 miles and theirs have over 20K each. Is it an EcoBoost thing to look like that? Knowing about the TSB and that my truck falls into the build date of it has me super sensitive to every little shake or hiccup. I really like this truck and I just don't want it to fry a set of heads or the block.

My '08 V10 did that and my current 3.5 EB does it.

Ok Thanks. Just worried about the new truck. Wish I hadn't found that TSB.

Please, drive your truck and enjoy it.
EVERY vehicle made has a website and on that sight is some problem that a few have and 99.99999999% don't.
Problems make it to forums....positive experiences seldom do.

Soot in the tail pipe is common. It will be interesting to see if the port injection on the new engines makes a difference. BTW, my 2012 has over 100,000 miles on it and it passed emissions just fine. It blows out a puff of black smoke on startup, it has done it since new.

I think the black soot is as a result of the direct injection and the turbos, regardless, it's totally normal as many posters have stated. I have a 2016 2.7 EB that also falls into that TSB with the engine build date and possible engine replacement later on. I stressed about it, but decided to drive my truck and enjoy it, and if it happens, it happens. If it starts burning oil or blowing smoke like crazy out of the tailpipe, it's probably getting ready to die. I have 7K miles on mine and will tell you this: I have the "engine studder" in mine as well and learned something. If the studder (rpms at 600 and engine idle goes up and down and it acts like it wants to stall) occurs with the AC off, then it is probably the purge valve. Supposedly the studder with the AC on is perfectly normal. I had my purge valve replaced because it was getting stuck open, and it corrected my rough idle with AC off. It did not throw a code, but after testing they knew the purge valve was bad. I took it back after I realized the studder was still there with AC on, and the technician tested 2 new 2017 EBs on the lot and said they did the same thing, so it was normal operation. I just drive it and don't let it bother me anymore. Just one of the quirks in the engine, but mine is otherwise running great and I am hoping that TSB don't get me, but not being too worried about it.

I with you Jeff. My engine is also in that build date range. I have 14000 trouble free miles to date. The only time I even think about this TSB issue is when I read a post about it. I'm very happy with the performance and MPGs I'm getting with this engine.

Yeah, I'm just not going to worry any longer. I'll check the oil on a regular basis and drive the truck like its stolen. I have an appointment for a leaky windshield washer bottle and I'll see if I can get them to test the purge valve. The local service guys are great unless they get short on time. Then they have to work only on what's on the service ticket.
