Hi,
Can ARP studs be reused? The only reason I ask is that I saw a set for the 6.0s for sale for $150.00 Canadian. For us to buy them new they are normally $500.00 USD which means $625.00 Canadian after exchange.
I could probably pick them up for $125.00 Can. I thought if they are reusable I would grab them for a possible future project.
Yes they are reusable. Be sure the threads are not damaged or stretched and all of the nuts and washers are with the studs. The washers are very important to apply the proper torque. Also, you MUST use their thread lubricant and torque to ARP specs NOT FORD SPECS. If you are not sure of the torque for the stud kit part number, do yourself a favor and contact ARP for correct torque and lubricant to use.
Ed, you said it very well. ARP studs generally do not stretch and by all means, are reusable if all the pieces are still there and you install them properly. If you are doi g studs on your own, this is a good money saver. If you're having a shop do it, they'll likely deny any warranty if they give one in the first place.
They have to stretch in order to do their job. The difference between the ARP studs and stock TTY is the grade of steel and heat treatment, so the stretching-strain curve is different. Fastenal has a really good document about the engineering of fasteners, but here is a quick image.
I've never used the ARP studs but lubrication is very important to getting the correct amount of elastic stretch. What I would be more concerned about rather then the stud is the nut. In structural applications while bolts can be reused, the nuts cannot due to the thread distortion noted above.
Right now I can't find the resource I'm looking for, maybe later.
