My 2001 7.3 has a squealing in the motor. First thought bearing somewhere along the serpentine belt. I removed the belt and started the engine but it still squeals. Pulled off the turbo intake hose and turbo felt tight, no play back and forth or in and out. Squeal is at idle speed 750 rpms and will begin to fade out around 1200 to 1300 rpms. Almost gone by 1400 rpms. Any ideas?
My bad, I was looking at the wrong pipe. The up pipe as seen from the drivers side does have soot on it. It's about a fingers width wide and about 1 1/2" in length. Is this an exhaust leak I'm hearing? The has been no issure with performance from the engine at this point.
It could be. This is the most likely thing I can think of since it wasn't the serpentine system.
As to other possibilities, I would instead go hunting with a stethoscope than taking time to look at them one at a time. Take a 4 foot pice of 3/8 inch tubing, tape a 1 foot stick to the last foot of it to make it easy to direct.
Hold the other end of the tube to your ear and go hunting for the noise.
