My recommendation is to grab a pair of pliers and dig around under the dash until you find the cable. Chances are it just frayed and broke so there should be enough cable for you to grab onto with the pliers.
I've seen people drive around for years with a pair of visegrips locked onto a frayed hood-release cable.
