Hi just wanted to say i bought a 93 explore three years ago with 83,000 miles on it . I now have 144,600 miles on it. the org engine, trans . only replaced front brakes, rotors, calipers . I really can't complain about it at all. It's really dependable for us.
My 1998 just turned 30,000 miles. Dealer kept it for 2 months about 2 years ago and did ALL the recalls (about 14 at the time). Ever since it has had no problems.
Trade my '91 at 168k. Never had any problems till the thermostat stuck at 138k miles and cost me a $1800 head job. Then they started leaking again so I traded it. Lessson learned was that thermostat need to be changed every 70-80k miles. I did regular oil changes and the tranny.
The thermostats go defective unexpectedly. So carry a spare, only $16 at the Dealer. And a small 10mm socket or wrench. Could save you $900 to $2000 in engine work.
About your rebuilt or used tranny question.... it depends on how much you are willing to pay. Most rebuilds will only give you up to 12K or 1 year warranty. When mine went on my 92 I decided to spend the extra coin for a new Jasper trans that had a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty. Cost me $2200, but it was worth it considering I was getting price quotes for $1600 - $1800 for a rebuilt... a no-brainer at that point.
