ignition timing

I did a tuneup yesterday on the truck and went by the sticker on the valve cover and set the timing to 6 degrees at idle. After I replace the timing chain this week I want to set it up a little more. My question is how much should I go? It is a 360 with a rebuilt stock 2 barrel, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points and condensor. I am at about 5000 feet if that makes a difference.

Thanks
Matt

Try 10*, that's what a lot of folks run in these FE's.

I like to start at factory specs and work from there. Advance the timing a degree or two at a time, take it for a spin and load the engine in about 2nd or 3rd, listening for detonation. When you hear the tell tale "pinging," back it off until the detonation is gone.
