Just took home my new Superduty supercab short bed 6.2. I put about 350 miles on it in a weekend and noticed there was a lot of brake dust on the wheels. Have you all been noticing the same thing? I am wondering if it is just the brakes wearing in or if it is just the nature of these trucks? I'm thinking that 14" rotors+ dual piston calipers may cause it. I have the 17" Aluminum wheels with 265/70/17 tires. Wheels were really easy to clean off, just surprised how fast it built up
I have always thought ford pads were very dirty. Previous fords have had the same dusting issue, 2000 escape, 2004 f150, 2013 escape, 2016 SHO, As well as my new superduty. On my F150 I finally changes the front pads out after 50k miles because I grew tired of cleaning the wheels every week. Even switching the wearever gold pads (non ceramic) the difference was night and day. I could go 6 ,months without a wash and it would still not buildup on my wheels like the OEM pads did after a week. May wind up doing the same to this new truck too.
@MaroBrown, thx for the reply, that's kind of what I was thinking, I have seen 04-14 F150's driving around with wheels that have turned almost pure black in front from brake dust. Rears weren't as bad, but still pretty heavy. I will give mine a chance for several months, and then change it out in spring if I get tired of consistently cleaning wheels.
Maybe it's just me but I would rather have great braking and dust than lousy braking and no dust. I've had pads on a vehicle that said they were virtually dust free (ceramic) and the braking was so bad - even after the burnishing - that I didn't feel good letting my wife drive it.
So far, the brake dust on my F-350 isn't enough to notice and I've washed mine twice since it was new in January.
Usually harder brake pads like ceramic = slightly more rotor wear. Guess you have to decide on your sacrificial and if not having any brake dust is worth the trade off.
These Ford pads don't dust nearly as bad as my past 3 German vehicles or my last GMC and Nissan.
Couldn't agree more. It seems my 2017 leaves more brake dust than any of my previous-gen trucks, but *nothing* like the buildup on our Mercedes and Audi vehicles.
Soft pads generally provide a very smooth, positive braking feel and good performance...but they don't last as long.
Even normal driving will produce brake dust. I wash my truck a minimum of once a weeks. It's a good idea to keep the brake dust cleaned off of the aluminum wheels if you want the wheels to stay looking nice.
Agree on the German cars, being a BMW / Audi fan, with a few in the stable. The OE pads from both BMW and Audi are HORRID for brake dust. My Audi is running a big brake upgrade with Pagid (Porsche OEM), and my both my BMW X5 and 135i are running M brakes with Carbotech 1521 pads. I checked, and it looks like Carbotech makes pads for our trucks. I don't have any experience with compounds other than the 1521.
