I would like you’re help making an offer on what I believe to be a late model 1950 F4 stake body truck. This is what I know about it,
Good condition
Little rust, cab corners, lots of dirt
Driven into a barn 1980, hasn’t moved since, no mechanical problems
300 mi. since last oil & lube
All glass, lights and lenses intact
Interior OK, no surprises
Engine type, don’t know
Is this enough info for anyone to help me come up with a high/low offer price window?
Thanks,
1. Where is it/where are you located?
2. What data is on the rating plate (glove box)? If no rating plate, the VIN should be stamped on the top of one of the frame rails between the front of the cab and the front axle.
If you are in the rust belt you will probably have to pay more for a truck with good sheet metal all around. The rating plate will have other information that will indicate the type of engine, axle, etc.
The stock engine is either a 239 cubic inch V8 or a 226 cubic inch, both with a 3 speed transmission. There was a heavy duty 3 speed and 4 speed available as options. Both of these are flatheads; the V8 is more desirable. If the truck has a later model overhead valve engine, it would make the truck less interesting. Verify that the engine is free (it turns) by wrenching on the front of the crank. Good Luck! I'm a big fan of the larger Fords; I have an F3.
Oh Steve the 4 speed trannys were standard from F-2 to F-6 and optional on the F-1. The heavy duty 3 speed was optional on the F-1 to F-5 and F-6 School bus chassis.
