found out my wife has a 95 Aerostar from a previous marriage being stored at my new son-in-law's house and I had to move it because they were moving. went to get it and the engine would only turn over half way. so I started asking questions like what happened. I was told it was overheating so it was parked, checked it out and found a disconnected heater hose to the rear and thought cool, easy fix.... wrong. put water in and it still leaking up front and in the back, kinda like us old folks, found a split in the radiator and a freeze plug behind the flywheel. I think I will go to pull and save and get a used motor to rebuild. I would get rid of it but it was her fathers and has sentimental value I will probably rebuild the trans while I am at it because it has over 100,000 miles on it and it was starting to slip. the body is great, so I will keep mama happy and fix it. I can buy a used 3.8 for about 200 bucks and rebuild it for about 500 bucks more or less. would it be easy to upgrade to a 4.0?

Reason: crappy typing
The Aerostar never came with a 3.8 liter engine; the early models came with a 2.3 I4, 3.0 v6, and the 4.0 v6 was available 1990 and later. If yours has a 3.0 v6, and you want to upgrade it to a 4.0, you will need to get the entire wiring harness and their sensors and actuators, front dress, and drive train. The transmission behind the 4.0 is stronger than the 3.0 version, and the 4.0 vans also came with the 8.8" differential, unless it's an AWD version.
i will check it out i thought for sure it said 3.8. it is a fwd. oh yea it is a windstar not an aerostar, i got. it mixed up with my old van. my bad brain fart.

Windstar is a completely different creature from Aerostar. As in your other thread, you should find discussions about Taurus, as that's what Windstars were based on. And no, you will not be able to upgrade the 3.8 to a 4.0 without a lot of trouble. You wouldn't want to anyway; the 3.8 is more modern engine, with better efficiency and power. The 3.8 made around 200hp, while the 4.0 never got past 155.
You could build it as a 4.2. Main hard parts would be crank and pistons as the rods are supposed to be same length and interchange. Also worth looking at is whether yours has the split port heads and variable length intake runners as some sources say 1996 was the first year, and others report all windstar 3.8's got the "upgrade" vs the mustang installs.
The trans definitely needs the upgrade parts as those were just itching to pop when least suspected. The taurus, sable, and windstar all suffered the fate of head gaskets and transmissions.
