That would require me to assume that they were correct to begin with which I'm not comfortable doing. I will gladly start from scratch instead of trying to duplicate someone else's failures. I've made some dummy bearings so that I can trial and error a bit. I've come up with a way to measure pinion depth accurately enough to get me started and just do a pattern check from there. I'm looking forward to it. If only UPS would show up. This upcoming 3 day weekend would be a good time to get it done.

MPH, good call on not trusting the past set-up. A photo that you posted earlier (post #281) showing the center section with the back cover removed has the left carrier cap installed up side down.
The U shaped stamping should have the open end of the U's opening the same direction on both the housing and cap. I am a Treasure Valley resident as well. Would like to see your project in person sometime. I am good at lurking on forums and rarely post. PM me if you would like to give me a guided in person tour.

Excellent observation. I would have installed them back correctly but didn't notice it til you pointed that out. Just more reason not to go by anything the previous clown did.
You can p.m. me if you'd like to stop by sometime.

I didn't mean trust where it was. I meant for a starting point.

Got some engine detail items taken care of while I'm waiting on one stinking clutch plate my supplier didn't include in my rebuild kit.
Got the missing clutch plate today and assembled the differential carrier. It's quite a piece of machinery, a Dana 60.3, also known as either a Powr-Lok or a Trac-Lok, I can't remember which. It's what is more commonly known as a "posi" to us older gear heads.

Installed the alternator after disassembling it, cleaning everything, regreasing the bearings etc. Looked pretty good inside, I'm sure it isn't original. Got the fan and pulley installed, oil bath air cleaner, coil, throttle linkage etc.

Here she is, very simple and beefy.

Very interesting design. When I first disassembled the rear axle I thought this thing was completely worn out by all the gap here. This is by design and when one wheel tries to slip, the pinion gears ride up these ramps and further tighten the grip on the clutch plates. Pretty cool I'd say.

That engine looks very nice, and the decals dress it up too.

Looking good MPH.
Did you clean out the grooves in the armature where the brushes ride against? Not absolutely necessary but nice to do.

I just finished reading all 300+ posts on your build thread. Wow, such amazing work, truly impressive!

I can't wait to see your finished rig. What are your plans when she's finished? I'd be afraid to even leave my garage with a truck so perfect for fear some idiot would run into it. Will you take to shows? Concours competition?

THanks for the compliment, I'll drive it a little around to enjoy it but then it's gonna get sold. I have a 72 one ton sport custom and a 72 F-250 Explorer special with every possible option waiting to be restored.

That means two more builds to watch.

Finally some progress.

Finished setting up my rear axle. I went ahead and replaced the ring and pinion gears with new ones since the old ones looked a little sketchy. The last thing I want is noisy gears. After I get the axle shafts in and brake backing plates etc installed, it's time to tackle the front axle.

Got the pinion depth set by pattern, backlash set at .006, carrier bearing preload at .015 total, pinion bearing preload at about 18 inch lbs.

She's all installed, ready for axle shafts etc.
