Hey all,
I'm getting ready to put new coolant into my Ranger and I'm trying to figure out how much I need to get. I have a 4.0L V6. Thanks for the hep everyone!
I have always put about a gallon and a half of straight antifreeze and then top off with water,,,,i dont use the 50/50 mix stuff,,,but you can find that info in your owners manual,,,if you dont have a manual you can download it here some where ,, Pawpaw can point you to it or just search this site and find it
A No cost owner manual down load link is in the "Miscellaneous" section of the Tech Info thread, atop the forum index page.
Use the recommended % Distilled water to coolant mix, so to get the proper heat conductivity Transfer Rate.
Don't use more than 70% coolant/water for the long life coolant recipe, as there is no advantage & the heat conductivity rate is Slower with higher coolant % mix, so the engine components & lube run Hotter than designed for. A good recipe for making sludge, varnish, carbon in the lube system, piston ring coking & other mischief.
We've paid the automotive Engineers who've spent a lifetime at their profession, Big Bucks to tell us how to maintain our vehicles & they've put all that knowledge in writing....called the Owner Manual. So, to make our vehicles work real good, last a loooong time & not cost too much to maintain, all we have to do is open, read & heed what the manual says about Maintenance.
Coolant change is a good time to inspect radiator hoses internal tubing for micro cracks when pinched/squeezed & replace them if cracks are seen, also consider replacing the heater hoses, thermostat, radiator cap, serp belt & maybe the water pump if all have 100K or more miles on them. Motorcraft cooling system parts are of good quality & recommended.
More thoughts for consideration.
