Well im finally going to break down and put in a different cam in my 400. Im currently getting about 7-8 mpg with my truck and this thing has f.i. on it. This is just not cutting it with me. I am at a lost at this dang thing. The motor has good compression, vacuum is at 18-19", and i have it tuned to run a 14.7:1. But yet still the crappy milege. I know Im not going to be getting 20 but i thought i would at least break 10. All Fuel and ignition component are new. I have my plugs gapped at .060 since i have a 90's distributor in it. So only thing i can think of to change next would be the cam. so what do you guys suggest for a daily driver looking for the most mpg but not be completely gutless. Also im going to change out the timming chain at the same time. I know i can put it +4, 0, -4 degrees. Now is straight up factory retarded 4 degrees or do the aftermarket sets advance them already. My truck is a 77 f150 4wd 400 c6 3.50 gears 31" tires. Motor is stock except edelbrock performer non egr manifold, 90's model distributor out of a 460, and I have holley's 700cfm tbi setup on it. I don't plan on going past 4500 rpm much and i tow occasionally
Thanks
Richard
well i don't really have a clue. past owner put this motor in back in 97 and it is a remanufactored motor. thats about all i know about it. I would guess it have a stock type cam in it. Probably no rv cam or anything because this motor is gutless.
Thanks again
Richard
If they just did a factory regrind on the cam you could have a little as 0.400 lift @ the valve and even retarded up to 8 deg. Probably 8 to 8.5:1 compression so it can run on goat pee and not ping.
There can be any number of reasons for poor mpg. The vacuum advance may not be working correctly, the timing could be retarded or have a slow advance rate.

The engine may not be reaching the normal operating temperature. Wrong temp. thermostat or missing one?
Do you live in an area with mountainous terrain or a lot of traffic congestion? Are you an aggressive driver or do you drive with an egg shell under the accel pedal? What percentage of city to highway use would you estimate?
I think the best I ever got on a long trip was about 17. It had a 600 Holley, a Performer cam and intake and 2.75 gears with 28" tires. Around town it never did that well. 10-12 maybe, but I never complained about the performance.
