Building 351... I have DO0E Heads.. Any point in switching to GT40p?
I plan to do a mild build for my 1970 351 to go into my 79 F150 4x4. I have the DO0E heads, but I could get a set of GT40ps for a decent price. Just wonderin' if its worth it or not. How much do the headers run that would be needed? Aftermarket heads definatly aren't in the budget. I do plan on putting in a better cam though. A 4bbl intake and carb is in the future, but for now I will be running stock intake w/ a rebuilt 2bbl. Any advice or help is appreciated! Thanks!

My .02 worth would be to stick with these heads. Have a valve job done and have some port work done to them(particuarly the exhaust side) and I think they'll work as good as any gt40's. I've been shot down on that before though so you may want another opinion.

Looks like a toss up around here you could port and install larger valves for $400 and they would work a little better than gt-40p and the price would be comparable. headers just for the "p" heads in your truck are around $219 you can use cheaper headers but as to weather or not they work is a gamble. Seems either way is a draw. Would think you would have to allow the engine to breathe better to see any real gains (getting a 4bbl and intake with headers, but I would say you know that). Good luck

i would stick with the 70 model heads. you may want to check valve diameter and i feel pretty sure that you will find a 1.84 intake valve. the gt-40 head was equipped with the 1.84 intake valve, but you would need to increase the head bolt holes. it strike me that the 351w has 1/2 head bolts. if you use the gt-40p heads i think that you will have to open up the existing head bolt holes to 1/2 bolt for the 351w block. port work equals dollars and if you are looking for a modest increase in torque and horse power. i would look for a dual pattern cam profile that favors the exhaust side and stay conservative with carb choice.
