460 tuning
Any ideas?
I have a '93 F250, 460, 4x4, 5 speed with 3.55 axle ratio. Empty it gets 14MPG driving back and forth from Anaconda MT (elv. 5280) and Helena MT (elv. 4300) at 65mph -- this trip includes crossing the "great divide" on McDonald Pass (elv. 6300).
Loaded, pulling a double with a 19', 4500 pound travel trailer and a '64 CJ5 at 2300 pounds, the worst it has ever gotten is 8.7MPG.
Please note that pulling a double requires a level of concentration and situational awareness that is exhausting. Even gentle curves require you to slow down to avoid oscillation. Minor steering corrections must be made with great care.

What is your axle ratio? 3.55? 3.73? 4.10?
Is your truck conventional or stretch cab?
When you get 6mpg are you loaded heavy or empty? Are you towing? If so, what is the GCVW?
What are the driving conditions? Low range 4x4? Highway? How fast? City (stop and go)? Short trips (10 miles or less)?
Hey you guys out there, what do you get with '89 460's with C6 trannys?
What size tires are you running? At what pressure? Custom wheels? What size? (16x6, 16x7, 16x8 etc.)? Deep dish wheels?
Big, agressive, deep lug, off road, traction tires can cut your fuel economy severely.

One must wonder if your engine is burning way too rich? Has it been checked on a diagnostic machine?
Have you had your tranny and torque converter checked? Has your tranmission been serviced lately?
Have you checked for exhaust restrictions? Have you had you catalytic converter checked?
