Engine swap

How hard would it be to swap original 5.0 with a 78 351m

Can't speak to mount difference - I'm sure someone will chime in - but the M does not have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. 302 is SBF, 351M is BBF.

Why the change?

5.0 is a different engine family than the 351m/400. Not a direct swap, you would have to swap trannies if it's a automatic or swap bellhousings if it's a manual. And the manual bellhousing swap can be a can of worms.

If you do not have inspections, you could swap the 5.0 over to a carb. It would be a little bit of work, the gas tanks/fuel system would have to be modified also. But under all that junk is a good old 302 that will accept a intake and carb.

And the tanks/fuel system would have to be changed/modified anyway if going to a carb'd 351M.

Do you have inspections? We don't in Florida per se, but there is a law on the books about not modifying after sometime in the 70s, so it could be a problem. What yr is the truck?

Yeah I new it was a long shot from a big block to small block if I could find a good bed I'd restore 78 1 owner 168000 actual miles all original 4 speed granny f 250 4x4 much more fun to drive. But the 85 is kind of rare f150 4x4 5.0 efi towing package factory 2.5 inch lift power everything Solid straight body but engine has drove me nuts to the point I'm driving a Dodge lol.

Never heard of a factory 2.5 inch lift on a f150. What type of lift does it have, suspension? I would not put it past some dealer somewhere to have put a lift on it and made it a promotional truck of some sort.

The factory doesn't like lifts generally, the center of gravity becomes too high. Even the few times the factory did have a special "off-road" version(I think some of the little Rangers could be had like this) it was only 1 inch.

This truck also has a handling package 4 shocks up front the lift is 2.5 inch blocks under leaves also factory installed overload springs stops are hot revited to frame somewhere a few years ago I found apparently these were all options you could order. Truck sits like a 250 could easily fit 32 11.50s on it as it sits

Put a carb./intake on it, switch ignition systems and enjoy. I swapped a carbed 351W for a problem plagued '89 5.0L EFI and like it a lot.

Removing the high pressure fuel pump on the frame rail and using a pressure regulator in conjunction with the low pressure in-tank pump should solve the fuel issue. (or put on a mechanical pump and replace the in-tank pump with a drop tube)

The only trucks that I'm aware of that were factory lifted were 1967/77 F250 4WD's also known as High Boys.

Have a divorced transfer case and in cab fuel tank. The front could have either 5 or optional 6 leaf springs with an optional H/D leaf.

All 4wd trucks have blocks under the leaves in the back. You do have the handling package with the quad shocks up front.

While you could put large tires on it, I would not recommend it without a gearing change. The little 302 doesn't have much torque to pull around really large tires. And anything much over 31X9.5 inch tires are going to rub the radius arms in a tight turn. Been there, done that.
