OPEN or LS ?
The way I've always check is to jack up the rear and spin the wheels, and look to see if they both go the same way and if they do its LS, and if they go in oposite direction its open.

LS is about a 50% positrac, thats why its called a Limited slip. My 1995 Cougar XR-7 has a LS 8.8, if I apply the brakes with light pressure for a brake burn, it will smoke both wheels. If I apply heavy brake pressure, it will only smoke the drive wheel.

Thanks, Then if it turns out to be a LS.....
Then I figure there will be an additive when changing
gear oil, is this only from FORD or is it available aftermarket?
Best one to use, etc.

there is not always a friction additive needed for limited slip. there are mechanical l/s too. auburn makes one. it depends on if yours has clutches or is mechanical.
you can buy gear oil with the additive in it or buy it seperately at the parts store.
