ecoboost article

Motor magazine ( motor.com) has a pretty detailed article about what's going on with the ecoboost in the July issue.

Just go to motor.com and click on magazine, then find the July issue and move down to the ecoboost article. Seems to have been written by someone who's worked on a few of them. Some good descriptions of the complexities as well as things to watch out for when doing diagnostics and repairs.

Very good article! Most things we've discovered along the way since 2011 in the F150 forums. Ecoboost engines have been sold by the millions since 2011 and with great success. Yes, there are some issues and some teething pains that come from new technology derived from old school usage.

Very interesting. Here's a quick link: https://www.motor.com/magazine-summa...oboost-engine/

Curious they didn't go into more details about some of the other topics of concern often floated here on the forum. But I don't know Motor's slant...maybe that's not their goal.

Agreed sir and one of the things that I would have liked to have seen mentioned was the extended oil change cycles that Ford seems to believe it OK. I personally believe that 10K oil changes on an ecoboost is a contributor to early failure. Additionally, the variances between actual spark plug life on an ecoboost vs what's in the maintenance guide.

People who buy these engines should be made aware that even though you get diesel like attributes with gasoline maintenance, you still have more frquent maintenance that an n/a gas burner.

The extended oil maintenance cycle seems to be a newer idea floating around. I'm not sure if it's the oil or something else. Some ideas for pondering:
- We've read about multiple high-mileage trucks w/o issues, so maybe beating these engines is the best environment for them. That would align with that huge endurance testing video series Ford did when they first came out with the EB. Those running average (or below average) miles per year are going to be in the 60-90k mile range now. Maybe the EB is just like a Diesel engine and needs to be run warm and long to stay healthy. Short, city driving is bad.
- I've been playing on BITOG for about a year now and fuel dilution is a common occurance with those submitting used oil analysis for review on the forum. Often the oil still has remaining additives, but has been sheared down to almost (or well into) a 5W20 weight range. So maybe 10,000 miles on the oil isn't the problem...it's the fuel that's diluting the oil.
- Motorcraft oil filters are made by Purolator and there are a lot of Purolators (including some MC branded filters) that are tearing during a normal oil cycle. BITOG has many, many examples of filters cut open and tears all in the same location. I woudn't say a majority of the filters cup open for analysis show tears, but many do. Who knows what kind of crap gets past the filter if the media tears; that could lead to problems too.

Is it one of these? A combination? Who knows...
