So I went and got it it over with yesterday. Put my first dent in my truck. I was loading my quad on the trailer on a grade and failed to lock the coupler, popping it off the ball. Couple questions before I get an estimate- do you all think it will be cheaper to replace the tailgate or repair the dent? And also I'd assume they will just have to paint the tailgate itself and not have to blend into the side bed panels since it is isolated from the rest of the body by the taillights? It's white platinum tri-coat.
You don't mention if you have a tailgate with a camera. If you do, replacing it could be rather expensive. I'd get an estimate, then compare.
Remember that you can always recover some of the money by selling the damaged gate.
White Platinum is only available on Lariat + models which all have a backup camera. Regardless, it wouldn't be any more expensive since the camera hardware can all be swapped over to the new gate. If you have the tailgate step would likely increase cost since those gates are actually different.
I would think it would be cheaper to just repair this tailgate.
Yes it has the camera, bed step, and factory spray in liner. You're probably right about a replacement tailgate being pretty pricey. Worst part of it all I never put a dent in my 2011 in all 6 years that I had it!
That happened to me because of the short shank on the weight safe hitch. It placed the jack handle to close to the tailgate, When my wife opened the tailgate it hit the jack handle. I bought a perfect (new take off) tailgate oxford white from Athens Fords site for 626.00. They have lots of new take parts for the 2017 SD's @ times free shipping. Got it in 3 days. It was packaged well. Like Troverman said I switched my camera over, took me and hour.
It's repairable and the repair will be much cheaper than a tailgate. It would appear that the whole thing will need to be repainted but a new tailgate also requires paint.
You might see if a paintless dent repair person can take it out. Looks like minor paint damage in the center that you might be able to touch up carefully with a brush after the dent is out.
I would bet that a good body shop would be able to knock that out in no time. I would hate to think what a new tailgate would cost. You would most like still have to get a new tailgate painted.
Thanks all. I'll make a few phone calls this week and see what I can come up with. While it's in the body shop it might be my opportunity to get some Bushwacker OEM flares installed too.
