All you Air Force guys, I was in 2 years and then worked for Lockheed for 6 years at Reese AFB in Lubbock Texas. I was a jet engine mechanic.
Hey Scott,
Small world Man. I am a Jet Engine Mechanic at Dyess (about 150 miles from Lubbock) right now. Were you working J85's at Reese? We had T38's for a while at Dyess (never worked them though)then they got rid of them along with our KC-135A's, man I miss the Tanker. I have been Working F101-GE-102's for almost 7 years now on the B-1. I would go back to the old J57 in a minute. We are getting ready to PCS to Lakenheath in March. Will be working Pratt's again over there, looking forward to getting back to them actually. I still think GE should have stuck with lightbulbs. LOL. Who are you working for now? Lot's of jobs open for Engine troops right now. I just went for another 6 so I am in for a while more. Come this far might as well retire I guess.Take it easy.
Brad,
I was trained at Chanute on the F100 Pratt engine used in F15/16 (til they got smart and put a GE in(just kidding)). At Reese I was on the T-38 engines, the GE J85-5H/M. I was in shop and did complete overhauls as well as component changes (you know how fuel controls, oil pumps, fuel flow x-mitters, etc. can go bad). I LOVED it!!! I have to disagree about the GE engines, I really liked them, split compressor cases and all the components under the engine. I did not enjoy the Pratts in tech school. In 1989, Reese converted to contract maintenance (Lockheed got the contract) and the Air Force offered me an earlyl release under FY1990 rollback. I got out on Friday and started with Lockheed on Monday. In 1991 I was selected Air Training Command Mechanic of the Year. In 1993, our flying continued to be cut back and the T1A was brought on board so T-38 flying was cut almost in half. Lockheed crosstrained me to Airframe on the T1a ( I did phased inspections mostly and worked on the flightline occasionally.) I HATED it!!!
Anyway, in 1994 the base was selected for closure, after they repaved almost all the roads, put new floors in all the shops and hangers, and built a brand new hanger for the T1A's. The lay off's began and I fell victim. I moved back to central PA where I had grown up. I have been selling Fords for the same dealer since then. I have almost 600 vehicles delivered and alot of loyal customers (one just bought his 5th vehicle from me) and I am earning a pretty good living.
Anyhow, hope you enjoy your time in England. Feel free to e-mail me if you would like, I don't find many people around here that have any clue what I am talking about when I talk about jets.

I know the feeling. I seem to lose people when I get asked what I did at work today.( Ran a couple Engines, changed a Main Fuel Pump or an Aug Control or troubleshot an engine for Compressor Stalls etc, etc) Fun job though. Never know whats going to happen next. I don't really hate GE engines it just seems like the F101 is broke more than it is fixed and causes alot of long hours. I remember the last waterburner we had in the shop had been on the wing for almost 9 years. I guess like anything though if you want performance there is a price to pay. I am still waiting for Ford to build a Jet Engine though Take it easy and Have a Happy Holidays. I am home on leave right now (upstate NY), seems good to see snow again for a bit.
