Fix for a "no spark" problem

Fix for a “no spark” problem. ‘85 E150, 302 with EEC-IV engine system and TFI (thick film ignition).

Maybe this will help some else down the road.

Symptom: The engine had been running fine but died very suddenly and would not start. I tested for a spark and there was none. I remember reading an article describing problems with Ford’s TFI modules used with the EEC-IV engine system. I replaced the module and it started up perfectly.

How to: Disconnect the battery first! In my vehicle, the TFI module was mounted on the distributor. The two nuts retaining the module are recessed. You will need a special narrow outside diameter, deep 7/32 socket to take them off. I had to pull the distributor up and out to get at the module. If you must do the same, make sure you mark where the rotor lines up before lifting up the distributor otherwise the timing will be off. The new module cost me $86 CDN. It comes with a small packet of dielectric grease. Remove the old module by pulling it out of its electrical connection (look at the new module to see this). Clean off the matting surface on the distributor. Apply a thin film (hence the term Thin Film Ignition) to each surface then set the new TFI module into the connection on the distributor. Re-assembly of the rest is the reverse of the disassembly.
