Wednesday I was hauling a couple of horses to Idaho. I was climbing up Malad pass on I-15. It's a good climb for the truck but something I've done several times this summer A little warm around mid 90°s . Cruise set at 70mph following a friend in his duramax and another friend behind me with an 2002 7.3L Almost the summit, my truck shuts down. dash says I've gone into limp mode, and I coast to the shoulder.
I pull the codes and it's showing P0259 So I call my dealer and the service writter pulls up the code and says it's a Turbo Overboost. So I clear it and restart the truck, runs fine the rest of the week hauling horses around Idaho Wyoming.
Dealer says to bring truck in because there is a flash to fix that problem. Anybody else had an over boost with normal driving ? Pro's and Cons of the flash?
I never look at the boost gauge. The truck is stock and I figure the computer protects everything. I just had not heard anybody talking about there being a fix for problem. I've hauled horses up that same road numerous times and never had a hiccup. Must of been a combination of the grade, weight/load and the hot outside air temps on that afternoon that triggered the overboost.
I'm not sure what the fix is, Will it just de-fuel next time or did they bump the boost psi? Maybe it will just de-fuel, but not go into limp mode like last week, or just open the vanes in the turbo so boost drops off.
It sure had me worried when it shut down 150 miles from home and probably 50 miles from the nearest Ford dealer on a hot afternoon with a load of horses in a metal box hooked up to the back of me.
Dealer wanted $79.99 to re-flash the truck, I argued that it should be warranty and the dropped they charge and agreed they could get Ford to cover it
His duramax is a few years old and chipped. He was doing just fine other than the black smoke he was blowing.
He was ahead of me and by time he noticed I was off the road he was down the road and had to pull off at the next exit and go eat Ice Cream while he waited for me.
