Fuel guage not working

Fuel guage not working
So I have been driving the truck for years without a working guage. I think it's time do fix it. Based on other threads I have tried grounding the wire at the sensing unit and the guage goes to full. I pulled the sending unit and could not get a consistent reading. I am assuming the unit is bad. If the truck is a 49 F3 converted to 12V with the original guage which sending unit should i use. I have seen references to 6V and 12V.
