steering box seal replacement tip

I had to replace the pinion seal on my '92 F-150 4x4 this week and I learned a time saving tip from a co-worker. The service manual suggests disassembling the steering box to remove the seal, but if you remove the snap ring and give a quick jerk on the steering wheel with the engine running it will pop the seal right out. Be sure to have a pan under the truck to catch the oil.

Do you mean that you just turn the wheel a little very quickly to build pressure behind the seal?

Yes, Just grab the wheel and turn it 1/4 turn or less in one direction as fast as possible. The oil pressure will push the seal out. I had to do this about three times before the seal popped out.

Note: In my first post I called it a pinion seal, I meant to say pitman shaft seal. I'm not sure what the correct term is, but I'm referring to the seal on the shaft where the pitman arm is attached.

You are correct, it is the pitman arm shaft seal, and I have also removed the seal in the same manner, works great, But, Can be a little messy.
