If you're only trying to replace the gasket you can just drop the pan down and let it sit on the axle, and work the gasket arround the oil pick up. Just make sure to keep the gasket dry. If it's anything else, I'm with you. Do what Chiulton says and use an engine hoist to rais the engine enough to clear the pick up.
FWIW: When my clutch was being R&R'd we did the pan gasket. My mechanic said it was really easy with the tranny out. When you drop the pan, check that the oil pickup screen is not partly gunked up. Mine was half clogged.
Tall Paul, Dropping oil pan because my oil pressure went south . Screen or pump i guess! Thank's The old Merc - Ford flathead's were my early day's now back in into these Motor's. Fun City
Wow flatheads. I always thought they would be a real blast with a supercharger bolted on. I would like a 1950 F1 with a flathead straight six.
My oil pressure went south last month. Wasn't the sender because I looked down the filler neck and the rockers were dry. The first thing they say to do is pull the gauge sender and crank for 10 seconds to see if oil gushes out. I didn't do that, but when I determined it wasn't due to loss of oil pump prime, I reamed out the oil pump outlet passage to the filter mount and refilled it with oil. Screwed a new pre-filled filter on and cranked her over and the pressure came up immediately. Anyway have fun with that pan. BTW, how many miles on the truck?
Got 180000 on the truck, I checked that sender ,no oil coming out of hole. Motor still has lot's compression . With filter off ,oil come's out of hole but no great pressure. Top side isnt getting oil . Just want to get little more life from this before it need's another motor or rebuild.
Definitely gotta pull that pan. Maybe clogged pickup. My old '84 truck has close to 200,000 miles and runs like a champ (my boss owns it). Well hope you guys get to the bottom ( ) of it.
Gary, This is for a manual tranny equipped F-150. I cannot help yopu on a automatic. Been busy putting a clutch on my 94 f-150. Anyways I changed the oil pan on my 94 f-150 a couple of years ago. I also did not go by the chilton manual totally. Bear with me I will try to make this as short as possible. Remove neg batt cable. Remove fan shroud, drain crankcase. you might want to raise truck front end up on jackstands. Loosen up and/or remove bolts for the wiper motor. They are a pain, so I loosened mine up just enough for the clearance of the Intake. ( It is important to make sure they are loose enough) Or completly remove it. Remove transmission mount to crossmember (two 18 mm nuts) You probably should take the 4 screws out on the shifter boot. Take nuts off of the motor mounts so the engine will raise up. At this point I jacked up the front of the motor at the harmonic balancer. Watch as you jack up the engine so as nothing gets hung up. It will only go up so far anyways, because it will hit the wiper motor that got loosened up. Shim the motor and leave the jack at the harmonic balancer. Go to the rear of the tranny and jack up 1 and half inches and put a 2 X 4 in for a shim. Basically all you are doing is jacking up the entire engine and tranny assembly. If you go by the chilton manual you have to remove the radiator, upper Intake and Throttle body assembly. I cannot remember if I removed the starter or not. (Its not in my notes) When you have the front and back jacked up as far as it will go It will leave you just enough clearance to remove the oil pan. (I think I dropped the oil pan down and removed the oil pump bolts and pick up tube, then pulled out the oil pan. Use a high quality gasket on the new oil pan. This procedure took me 4 hours to do with the help of a friend. Remember this is not Gospel so watch as you jack up the front and Back (Tranny). Any questions e-mail me at EandTsaw@peoplepc.com Ed
Ed, I dropped the pan today, the pick up tube was a pain trying to get 9/16 in there to remove nut. Screen was plugged up just as some of guy's had talked about on forum. i didn't remove intake ,just enough room after jacking motor. I'll go back with new oil pump. Thank's Fun City !!!!!!!!
