i just got off the graveyard shift finally, my transfer to first shift went thru friday. i was getting tired of working that 10pm to 6am shift. makes it hard to get up and take the boat out all day playing on the mississippi.
7pm to 7am. Yep, it's 5:40 and I still have over an hour to go.
Oh well, just one more night, and I get a few days off.
Love the money, love the amount of time off I get (7 out of 14 days), prefer night shift, my friends, family and g/f hate it, they never see me if I'm working..
I don't really like it much in the winter, just eliminates any chance of you ever seeing the sun, which makes me miserable.
But, I go back to days for a few months in Jan, so, oh well.
He all: i work the night shift also.can't sleep right.i could easlily sleep the whole day and sometimes do.always tired.lack of motivation and i guess the list goes on and on.wish some people would have a daily card party or something.i got energy when i get off of work.you just can't do anything at that time in the morning.been doing this for many years and still no consistency.i even have to work the weekends.i guess theirs no winning here.got to make a paycheck to eat and jobs are tuff to come by.especially now !!!. i try to adjust the best i can and stay happy....joezee
in the last 2 years, I have been on 3rd shift(11-7) unless on overtime 3 different times, all my own choosing. i like it for a change every now and then. I am back on 3rd now for at least 6 months. I like it because it seems like I can get more done outside or in the garage when I get off work in the morning than I can when I used to get off work in the evenings. I think it would be hard for the family life, but I am divorced, so the only thing I have to worry about is seeing my kids and they don't care much which shift I work, as long as I can still have time for them....just my thoughts and ramblings....Ben
I did 12x8 for 10 years. Summer sucked cause you slept the day away. In my line of work there was minimal, but usually no sleeping @ work. By the time you got home you were so tired you had to sleep..............Then I changed to 4x12.
I deliver Milk to schools,hospitals,ect.. I start work at 11 pm and work till around 2 pm..I do that mon wed fri.. I m so busy at work i dont have time to think about being tired but when i get home i sleep like a baby.. its nice having weekends off now and im home alot more than when i was driving OTR which is a good thing and the money is good so i really cant complain
Currently I'm working a night/day shift conglomeration. 2 weeks ago, we started night work from 9:30pm to anywhere from 3:30-6:00 am. Then, we work from 6:00am to 11:00am-noon. We worked this shift for 1 week, then went back to days (6am-7pm) for last week. Now, this week is back to the night/day deal, starting tonight. We'll probably work this shift until the end of the month.
right when i turned 18 i started working in a warehouse running computerized saws that cut pipe / steel anywhere from a 1/8 inch wide, to 14 inch wide pipe.
it took me 2 nights to get use to sleeping during the day, and when i quit that job it took me 3 months to get use to sleeping at night.
i hated the night shift... screwed up everything between me and my girlfriend, and between me and my friends. i was in tech college at the time too, made it pretty tough. i slept about 3 hours a day.
I did shift work for many years (8-4, 4-12, 12-8 and a few in-betweens). I never could sleep during the day. I was always amazed that I was even still thinking straight with such little sleep. I think shift work is one of the most destructive things you can do physically and psychologically. Family life changes and usually not for the better. Everything is backwards. Like one of my old co-workers used to say: "Everything's screwed up when you work nights; you go to bed hungry and to the table with a hard on."

I've always worked either the afternoon or night shift. I tried working days, but I guess I worked 2nd and 3rd watch shifts for far too long and couldn't get used to it.
These days, I work for myself and find the best way to make a good $$$ is to work nights. I do mobile heavy truck/trailer repairs and am one of the few guys out there who is willing to work straight nights. Its really good for business
I usually start around midnight and am done around 7 am or so - depending on how many calls I get, though I am much busier in the winter months.
In the summer, its great to get home around 8 am and wash the truck, cut the grass, etc - then sleep tilll around 6pm. I NEVER have to drive in rush hour traffic (all my friends tell me this is perhaps the WORST part of their work day).
I know that night work isn't for everyone, but I've enjoyed it for the last 17 years or so.
It depends on the time of year and what needs done. In Feb-April there are quite a few nights put in during calving, of course I still have to work during the day too. Then during haying season there are a lot of nights spent baling hay, had a 28 hour day once this year. Luckily I didn't have to do that twice Then during Harvest I put in some long days, like drove truck from 5:30 in the morning until 11:00 at night and was up at 6:00 the next morning. Then just doing the farming I put in a lot of long days, but don't work much nights past 9:00. It isn't a good day unless you get in at least 10 hours of work. It's hard to believe how many hours I work but I still wouldn't want to do anything else. For some reason I really enjoy it, maybe it's because of the results I can see.
