Rotors "warp" with age as they go through heating and cooling cycles, the warpage can be measured with a dial caliper and is called lateral runout. ford spec is a max runout of .0015 of an inch,
Brake pads often wear In a pattern and can be measured and deciphered by a good tech so corrections can be made.
Since you are having the work done you are the mercy of the shop but for my money I would go with high quality set of new rotors and pads as I recall you bought this off a used car lot ? Used car lots are notorious for using the cheapest brake parts available since all they are after is to pass a safety check and be able to say "new brakes"
If your steering wheel is oscillating during braking your wheel bearings ( unit bearing ) tie rods and steering box should also be inspected.

Thanks, we bought used from a Ford dealership. They machined rotors and new brakes prior to purchase.
What pads and rotors do most of you use for towing with Ex?

If you are sticking with the Ford dealer then go with motorcraft. Otherwise Hawk LTS pads and powerstop rotors are a popular setup.
Also, almost guaranteed motorcraft parts were not used when the ford dealer reconditioned it for resale, that cuts too deep into their profit margin.
Read somewhere that Ford OEM and Motorcraft are not the same. True? Dealer said would use OEM. It would cost $100 more than at shop that uses Akebono. Worth it?

Motorcraft is Fords parts sales company, they sell parts that meet their specifications and are branded with motorcraft. It is probable that Akebono supplied the brake pads ford installed at the factory as well as currently supplies to motorcraft. The main thing the motorcraft name means to you is that the part meets ford specs, who supplies ford the part is not that important to you since ford is the company who is standing behind it.

Fwiw, Motorcraft rotors have a 24 month warranty, I'd start by taking it back to the dealer you bought it from and pursue that, they will have the invoice on file if they did the safety inspection/ work for resale.
Thought:
If your Ex had new brakes when you bought it and needs brake work @ 13k of towing I would look at your trailer brake setup and make sure it is functioning correctly.

Good idea but they didn't replace rotors when we bought it, just machined them. Brakes still have 7mm but trying to get to bottom of pulsation..sigh..
Could someone link me the rotors for 2001 6.8 4x4? Many choices just googling powerstop rotors.
Worth calling shop to see if they can order different parts than the Akebono? Seriously, the more I ask the deeper I get into this.
Correct,
Akebono makes quality American made parts and is a OEM supplier and at this point I think developing the relationship with your shop is more important then you telling them what parts you want based on some forum advise.
However, since you asked.....
Summit is a great supplier, free delivery, I can order at 5pm and have them the next day in NorCal

Hey I really appreciate that! This shop has good reviews and he goes to our church so I'd love to call him our new mechanic. Installing bumpstops for $15 where ford wanted $140. Installing steering stabilizer for $145 where Ford wanted $300. Rotors and pads not as deep of discount but $100 less.
