I just bought a 95 F350 7.3, and it has less power than the last 3 I have had with the same motor. It has 133k miles. Automatic. It smokes when it is started for the first time of the day until warmed up, and smells like unburnt fuel. It has an exhaust leak, I am assuming up behind the turbo somewhere, because the smoke comes from there when first started as well. I also have a fuel leak under the fuel pump somewhere as well. I have been told that there is a "weep hole" on the pump that is common to leak.??? The truck is bone stock. So with all this said, can anyone point me in the right direction??? Thanks in advance.
Have you changed the fuel filter? If not try changing it, and while the filter is out carefully clean the screen in the return, in the filter housing. It is about 1 1/2" down from the top of the housing. You can use a Q-tip with the cotton removed to scrape the screen. The smoke on first start up sounds like 1 or2 bad glow plugs. Replace with Motorcraft ZD11 glow plugs only, as others don't seem to last, and some will swell in the head when they go bad resulting with a head removal to get it out. The smoke from behind the turbo is probably the donuts on the up pipes need replacing, or better yet replace the up pipes with a bellowed set from Clay at Riffraff diesel, that does away with the donuts.
Thank you for all of the replies. This gives me some ideas to try. What do you think about the "weephole" being the cause of my fuel leak? Also, knottyrope, I don't know what a EBPV is. I am pretty new to the diesel worls, as far as doing my own repairs. Thanks again.
I'd be getting my fingers in the valley between the heads, feeling around to see exactly what is wet underneath. There's a lot of stuff in that valley that carries fuel (fuel bowl, fuel pump, fuel lines). Any of them, or more than one, could be a source for fuel leaks.
