Would anyone know what a dual mass flywheel look like?I have a 96 250 4x4 and there was two listings for it. I got the one that was avalible.I just want to make sure its the right one before i drop everything down.Thanks.
Look up Luk Clutch and look at their diagrams. I'm thinking about putting a Luk solid mass flywheel (SMFW) into my truck, which makes shifting much smoother. As the dual mass title states and as I understand it, it in essence has 2 parts to it. Luk's solid flywheel is one piece of metal which makes shifting smoother, lasts longer, and holds more torque. I spoke to Tom at Carolina Clutch, and he said of the Ford OEM clutches he's put in, around 2 out of 5 fail again. Of the Luk clutches he's installed, none have come back. Look at Luk, and maybe you should wait unless you're set on doing the dual mass because of $ or other issues. The Luk system is far better than Ford's factory setup.
Go with the LUK clutch with the single mass flywheel. You won't regret it. We put one in my brother's 97 PSD 350 and he loves it. The clutch works with about half the effort that it did with the stock setup and it works beautifully and it is about half the cost of a stock dual mass setup. By the way, a DMF is a flywheel within a flywheel linked together with springs. My brother's had about an inch and a quarter of play and that's with 90,000 miles.
I wish I knew this a few months ago ,cause i just did my F-350 PSD with the stock POS ***. if I ever need one I`ll for sure use the carolina /LUX solid

That is an indacation of a broken spring ,which makes the truck shudder while idling ,if the one you worked on is like that you should replace it .. EDIT DUH you did sorry I`am little slow some times
Jozey, Sorry for the delay. Been doing carpentry work today. What a pain in the .......... Anyway , I don't know what the acceptable amount of play would be in the dual mass flywheel(DMF) would be but if it is new I would think that it should not have much play at all as the springs would be as tight as they are ever going to be. Maybe some of the other guys would have some info on this. Guys?
Hey Mark, i just put the flywheel in and what a difference, the truck is so smooth now that you can hardly feel it running. No vibration or anything. Thanks for the info guys.If i have anymore ? about something i will let ya'll now.
Jozey,Hey, good job guy.Quite a job isn't it? I'm glad you had a good result from your efforts. So what did you go with, the Dual Mass flywheel or the LUK?
I went with the DMF,i thought about the LUK but i decided to go with this for now. the clutch looked good so i didn't replace it.I might go with the LUK flywheel and cluych when its time for a clutch. The DMF is to much money for me($900 my cost). But the truck is running 100 times better. Thanks Mark.
Jozey, Glad to be of some help to you, at least giving you the benefit of my experience with some aspects of the powerstroke diesel. Good luck to you with the clutch and if you have any other questions, this is certainly the place to come. Marks01L
