I have a 83 Ford F150, 351W that I have to replace the block. Can I use a newer block or do I have to stay with the 80's. I don't want to go to fuel injection. Are the FI blocks different?
They are the same. I know some of the 302's went to roller lifters which changed the block, but that is no problem, you can use regular lifters in a roller block, or use the roller lifters and cam if you get the pushrods also. I am not sure if they did this on the 351w or not, but you have options.
When I put a later 302 engine in my earlier truck, I swapped the timing cover so I could use the old mechanical fuel pump. When I did this, I found they used 1/2" locating dowels in the later block for the later cover. All I had to do was take a 1/2" drill and drill out the locating dowel holes on the old cover and it fit right in place. The 302 uses the same timing cover as the 351w which is why I brought this up.
The newer 351s have an in block dipstick and the 83 has an in pan dipstick. On the one I am putting in my bronco I am just using the newer pan to keep the in block dipstick.
