Kinda hard to read it from the picture can you posst the actual letters and numbers, or a pic of the Rating plate from the glovebox? I cant read what ever is stamped after the 98R, the next letter(s) will determine the model, the rest of the numbers indicate that it is a 1949. The serial number (they didn't call them VIN's back then) should be located in three places, the patent plate you show, the rating plate that I mentionmed and the one that really matters, on the pass. side frame rail near the motor mount.

Great to see another F4! As an F4, your serial number should read 98RTL- then the number. R being V8 and TL as truck light or F4. My F4 does not have the L in the serial number which would technically make it an F5. I don't think they were very consistent about the number stamping. My truck is definitely an F4.

Nice project. Yes it is an F4 and it is a 49, produced in St Paul, MN

The serial prefix changed from 8 (48) to 9 for '49/50

9 for the year, 8R for 239 V8, T for truck (clever isn't it?) and the serial number is pretty early for '49, probably produced mid-late February 1949 according to my data.

If there are characters stamped into the firewall we can tell you even more about your truck.

Regarding the 98RTL, you may find that in the serial number that is stamped on the right top frame rail up by the motor mount. Lightly stamped, they can be hard to detect. Shine a light at an angle after cleaning the crud off the surface.

....
The "T" stands for Model line T which is F-4 if the frame has the "L", or F-5 if not, or if someone simply forgot the "L"

My patent data tag, the glove box tag and the frame all have matching numbers 98RT-158974. There is not an L in any of them. The glove box tag has Model F4 on it and the original Kansas title had F4 on it also. There are a number of guys on the '47 and earlier forum saying that their jailbars have a Y in the serial number, for Tonner, but the trucks are clearly 1/2 tons. I don't think they were very consistent with their numbering when our trucks were built.

i got this F4 as a package deal, with this lot and a couple of engines and big crate of spares, still got to go back for the engines, crate, f1 and f3, paid $1000 for the lot, didn't think that was a bad deal, F1 is going to a friend for looking after my 50 ford short bus, the COE hood went to him as well, not sure about the F3, its missing hood and axle, so thinking cab and front clip off, then everything is going to the UK, with another F4 (52) a 56 F350, 53 F350 wrecker, and 2 70's f100's, all off to be restored and given a new lease of life, hope you don't hate me for taking them overseas.
