1988 f150 4x4 custume 4.9l 5 speed with wrong pcm

I just bought this truck and I believe the pcm is the wrong one and it is bad.can anyone tell me the right pcm.The calibration code is 8-51H-R00.The number on the the unit I think is the wrong one is e8tf=12a650-y2b if that would help.If any one can help me find the right one I sure would appreciate it. thanks

I list two part numbers for that calibration code:
E8TZ 12A650-YA & E8TZ 12A650-YB
I do not have the drawing number or ENGINEERING NO. for that PCM Computer.
The drawing number or ENGINEERING NO. is the type number you list above and the one that is on the part as Ford does not put the part number on a part as they change them all the time.

That shows to be the correct one for your truck. I have no idea of your skills but how do you know it is bad. Did you visually inspect the board? Or what are your symptoms and have you pulled codes? Sandy

thanks sandymane for your reply. the truck starts will run great no problem with starter or anything but when you stop and shut it off starter will drag a little truck will fire then shut down crank crank and crank till battery runs down or wait awhile it will start back.I took the pcm apart couldn`t see anything visually wrong with the caps but on the circuit board there is a dark burn like streek.I don`t have anything strong enough to really see the circuit.I don`t know if the problem is the pcm but have a friend that bought a f150 just like it ha the same problem turneg out to be the pcm.wondering if thats the right pcm for my truck before a buy one

Check this out for good instructions. Any problems doing it let us know. If you want a code reader for the Ford it is available but this method works fine. Reader is a little easier. You are OBD 1. Let me know if you do. Let us know what codes you come up with and the connector wire they use in the video can be a paper clip. What I use. I would also recommend a Haynes manual. It can get you through a lot of things that you may need to know about. Sandy

There were other videos associated with the one I posted. You might look at a couple more and see if you can get additional info that will help you. To do the KOEO Key on engine off procedure you just need the battery hooked up. And the check engine does not have to be on to retrieve the codes if you just want to check things out. Anything disconnected may throw a code but you will know why so you can read it when you have 12V hooked up.

I think the only difference between PCM's for your year is the Manual Trans. BTW Your clutch needs to be pressed to the floor the ENTIRE time you are getting codes.

You can see and read about these on Amazon
INNOVA 3145 Ford Digital OBD1 Code Reader $23.00
INNOVA 3149 Extension Cable for Ford Code Reader (Item 3145)
You need this since you have to keep the clutch depressed $17.00

I checked the pcm with a small microscope didnt see anything visually wrong noticed when it warmed up turned key off the fuel pump never pressured up.It would start for a few sec.then shut off.I was told it was the pcm but spent $18 on a fuel pump relay first. So far doing great Thanks
