i have a 1995 f-150 5.0 mod 4x4 and i have a question that maybe somebody else has had the same problem. when i am driving in od on a open highway i get a little over 2000 rpm and i hear a squeeling sound in the front of my engine. sounds like a belt slipping. also it happens in 4th gear or third when i am up over 2000 rpm.i have replaced my serpintine belt and it still make the same noise. this has been happening for about a month and iam waiting for something to break. anybody have any ideas? thankyou
I think I may know what the problem is.
How many miles do you have on your vehicle?
The culprit I think is the belt tensioner. I’m not sure if there is a way to test it. It may have lost some of its tension on the belt causing it to slip.
The prices are a little steep, I think around $65 or so for a new one. Or you can get one from the junkyard on a low mileage vehicle.
There could be something else causing it, but I think this I it.
I had that same deal in July! The belt was replaced and like yours, nothing changed. I ended up blasting about half a can of silicone lube between the pulley and it's bearing. Maybe hose it while the engine sits and take it for a quick spin on the highway... or hold the throttle open a bit while parked for a quicker diagnosis of the source. Let us know how it works if you do try it! It took a few treatments over two weeks in my case, but the noise has not returned in the slightest.
yes i have a lot of miles on 130000. i replaed the idler pully. the belt tensioner? is that the pully with the spring that you put a socket on it to change the belt? if thats it no i have not replaced it and yes i will look into it if its that one.
Yes you are correct, that is the belt tensioner. It has a spring in it to keep tension on the belt, over time this tends to weaken and cause your belt to slip.
About how far does your belt deflect when you push on it with your fingers? A normal v belt should deflect about a half inch over for about one foot I think? I’m not sure about serpentine belts.
Does any one else know?
This is the only thing I can think of that may be wrong, but it might not be. Because your tuck is not that old yet and its only a 95, but it has high mileage.
My truck is a 92 with 128,000 on the clock, my belt chirps when I first start it up, but than goes away after it warms up.
To buy one check out www.Carparts.com there are about $63 greenbacks.
Also you may want to go to your local parts stores to get the best prices.
Or like I stated before go to the junkyard, but it only may be $10 or $20 less than new.
