Upfitter problem?

I have my observation camera wired into upfitter number four. When I flip the switch on, the light in the end of it lights up, but I'm not getting any power to the monitor. I put a volt meter to the end of its cable and it is dead.

Is there an individual fuse for the upfitter or something I can check to get back up and running? Looking for troubleshooting assistance. I had the switch wired three years ago and it has worked without fail since.

Thank you.

I believe each upfitter has a fuse?

They do. Fuse 16 is for upfitter 4 and it tested fine.

The Upfitter lighted switch is on a different circuit than the actual load. Just because the toggle switch handle lights up when you flip it on, doesn't mean that the associated Upfitter circuit has power.

You're gonna have to do some sleuthing with a Multimeter.
  • Double check the Upfitter #4 fuse continuity using the meter's Ohms setting. The fuse may look fine, but the link inside could be cracked and not passing juice. (If fuse is good, Ohmmeter should read 0 Ohms.)
  • Check Upfitter Relay #4's operation. They are in the Upfitter Relay Box under the hood (not sure where that is in the 6.7's engine bay) Switch Multimeter to Volts setting. Put the positive lead on pin #1 of the relay. Put the negative lead to a ground point. Turn on Upfitter #4 - you should have 12 volts powering the relay coil. Then check Pin #3 of the Relay. If that Relay is working properly - your meter should show 12V when Upfitter switch is On and 0 volts when Off.
    • If you don't see 12 volts at Relay's output pin, disconnect your camera wire where it's attached to its source at the Upfitter harness and check again. (There's a chance that a problem with the camera could be loading down the circuit... although I would expect the fuse would blow) If Pin #3 is still stuck at zero with the Upfitter switch On - the relay is dead - buy a new one.
  • If the relay works, then check the continuity of the wiring to your camera. Put one lead from the Ohm meter beginning of the camera wire at the Upfitter harness connection and the other test lead at the camera end of the wire. If that wiring is intact, the meter will read 0 Ohms. A high resistance (non-zero) reading on the meter means that your wire is broken somewhere along its path - check crimps on wire connectors, etc.
  •
    • Also check the continuity of the return wire on your camera circuit. The meter should show 0 ohms, from the wire to a truck chassis ground point. If not,the camera power circuit has a bad Ground and electricity won't flow.
  • Reconnect all of the wires that you checked.
  • If the fuse is good, the relay works, and the wiring is intact and the camera still doesn't turn on, then something's funky with your camera.
Good Luck.

Thanks for this. Very informative. Problem was a broken wire. The power cord to the monitor is really thin... maybe 22 gauge. Odd thing is I can't really tell how it broke. Beefed it up, reattached it, and we're back up and running.
