302 rebuild

I have a 1980 ford bronco that has had the motor replaced prior to me buying it. all I know is that is it supposed to be a 305HO. how do I find out what year the motor is? I need to know this before I start getting parts to rebuild it. any ideas where the numbers on the block are, and if I have to remove the motor to find out? thanks.

305HO? not! on most all v8 ford blocks the casting number is on the side of the block just above the starter but its inverted, other than useing a mirror if the motor is still in the vehicle and its not hot, then stick your hand down there PALM up faceing the block, slide your fingure under the embosment, feel the digits, try to feel the first two digits, now squeez the digits with you fingur for a few seconds then pull your hand out and read the numbers that are now embosed in you fingur.
