I have a new 2016 F350 dually towing 16k lb fifth wheel. I'm due for oil change- been to every place locally to buy oil, no one stocks any of the oils on the approved list. Everywhere included Advance auto, Napa, Auto Zone, Walmart. To be clear- it's safe to use any CJ4 oil in the 6.7?

So we all over paid for these trucks- now does Ford think we are just going to run to the dealer and pay 50% more for motorcraft oil? You would think these morons would send communications to the owners who over paid for their trucks that they screwed up and didn't build these engines to run on newer CK oils. You would think that taking care of the customers would be paramount, sending us owners vouchers or coupons to buy the right oil at the dealers for there junk engines. Again- where ever you read, the Cummins will run just fine on CK oils. Should have bought the Dodge.

 

Motocraft dino 10/30 and 15/40 can be found at any Walmart as well as the motocraft filter. It's reasonably priced to boot.

Another vote for Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w40. Plus it meets the requirements for Severe Duty. Napa generally has it on sale 3-4 times per year, and it goes from $29/g to $19/g.

 

Firefighter, you seem a little bitter about this. The 6.7L engine was designed and started it's life in the world of CJ oil. I see it as a positive that Ford has given us an approved list of oil as well as a warning that the CK standard is not always approved. And that they continue to update the list as oil manufactures bring their CK oil in compliance.

 

Maybe your car buying skills aren't as good as you thought if you over paid. I was happy with the price that I got my 2015 Platinum for. Maybe you prefer Ford not tell you which oils may jeopardize your engine? Maybe you should have got a Prius?

 

I don't even bother to Change my own Oil. My Dealer does it for $99.95, and I don't even get my hands dirty,let alone having to dispose of 13Qts of Dirty oil and a filter. If I ever have a Warranty issue with the 6.7, I can show a stack of Oil change Reciepts for every 5K miles.

 

Disposing of old oil is easy. I drop it off at my local Wal-mart. I have started going to their shop manager and asking for 5 quart jugs that they are discarding. I route the oil as it comes out of the oil pan (using my Fumoto Drain Valve) right into the 5 quart jugs. No transfer from drain pan to jug to make a mess.

 

I bought this 5 gallon container from Amazon. It works perfectly to drain all oil with my Fomoto Drain Valve. The Fomoto tales a while to completely drain the oil but I just use a short piece of hose into it and come back 20 minutes later.

Then I take to used oil in the container to Advanced auto parts and dump it into their used oil tank.

 

Are you looking for dino or synthetic? All the walmarts I've been to carry the Valvoline Heavy Duty. Carquest / Advanced Auto usually stock the Carquest 15w/40 that's on the list.

Napa has the Premium Blue in stock for synthetics.

Even some of the generic versions are available from Tractor Supply, Walmart, and Autozoo in either synthetic or dino.

 

I concur with the original poster, he should have purchased the Dodge.

Agreed and once you make your decision live by it and quite whining. I had a 6.0 for 10 years. It had it's faults and I went to the forum for information not to cry about a poor decision on my part.

 

I am a huge advocate of changing your oil regularly, it was and I believe still is the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of any vehicle.

In 2015 when I entered the realm of owning a diesel I did extensive research on which oil I should use, I came up with Schaeffer Supreme 9000. I went and bought a fair amount of it for future use. I think I have enough for 2 maybe 3 more oil changes. After I read through this thread I was like bummed that it wasn't listed on Fords approved list. So I went to the company's web site and left them a message. Boy did I get an education. First, and thankfully most important for me or I would be looking at throwing $100.00+ of new oil out, CJ-4 oil purchased prior to 2016 is ok: "For a short period of time an oil showing CJ-4 in the API donut, without showing CK-4, would be acceptable for service even if not showing WSS-M2C171-F1. This oil would most likely be an older CJ-4 formulation, developed and licensed prior to 2016." The oil I have was purchased in December of 2015. I've attached the latest Ford "approved" list as well as the Ford article on what to avoid that has the above "older than 2016" quote in it.
