Front Stub Shafts

Quick question here. I'm getting ready to take apart my front end because I'm sure one of my spindle bearings is trashed. Never done this before but it can't be that difficult. My question is about the shaft itself. Guzzle's write up states that if the shaft is damaged in any way that it must be replaced. I would like to know what the negatives would be to replacing the bearings and running it like it is, if in fact it is damaged. Like I said, I haven't even verified if mine are worn or not. I'm just trying to figure this out beforehand. If the vehicle will drive now and just makes a crappy noise because of the bearing then why couldn't it work ok with a new bearing?

The shaft may no longer properly fit in the inner race. At minimum, you'll simply trash out another bearing.

the needle bearing in the front hub/bearing assembly rides directly on the stub shaft. If the locking hubs are locked there would be no problem but in 2wd and unlocked hubs the bad stub shaft would most likely eat the needle bearing in short order.

There's no minimum requirement so it's going to be based on your comfort level.

IMO it depends on how bad the damage is to the machined surface where the needle bearing rides. I would be more critical of the passenger's side since it has a long main shaft so that one bears more weight than the driver's side hub.

They are for ball joints so you can stop when you get as far as you want to go on the teardown.
