Guys, DTE calc is not to blame here. The fuel sender tells the IPC what % fuel is left. IPC multiplies by tank size and average MPG. So if average MPG is 10 or 20, it still must be measuring gallons left in tank to give DTE. Anyway, to simplify more, if it says 32 miles to empty, it shouldn't go empty. It should be fine until zero miles to empty and you'd think there would be some safety margin on that. At least that's the way it is on every other vehicle on earth.
The only vehicle I've run out of gas with was my old 57 Ranchero. When the needle touched the E it was like a switch was turned off. No warning or sputter.

I think it's more complex than that.
Yes, when I partially fill the tank the DTE increases.
However, I topped off the tank, drove ~120 MILES before the float moved (I was monitoring the fuel level PID) and was able to add 8 GALLONS. During that 120 miles, while the gauge never moved, DTE decreased normally.
I don't think the issue has anything to do with the fuel level in the tank. there are a few reports on the 2017 6.7 facebook page of this happening. it looks like it has something to do with the the low pressure pump

Interesting. So when you topped it off with another 8 gallons, did DTE go up?

No - My theory is that since the float had barely moved before I filled the tank, it didn't move enough with the fill for the computer to know that fuel had been added.
(Sorry, I should have included this info in my earlier post.)
Sorta thought we'd have heard something from chevmn56 today. Debating fuel strategies does nothing for the original post. What's wrong with the mans truck??

He said in a post that they can't look at it till Tuesday. Today is only Monday.
Well all of you that wanted to know what was up it's is a bad fuel level sender. . . . The truck did run out of fuel.......... But the sender is bad. . . . Known fact at the dealer. They said it was on national back order and wouldn't have till the end of August. They said its fine to drive it but they also said fill it when it says 100 miles to empty until the the sender gets replaced
Glad to hear it's nothing major. I also fill up at 1/4 tank, I don't like the idea of running the tank too low. If I'm on a long road trip I'll stop sooner just because in about ready to stretch my legs not much longer after it 1/2 a tank.
Good to hear the truck is okay. I always drive mine to 0 MTE when I get them so I know for sure how much reserve there is. I do a lot of driving in VERY rural west Texas and if the station where you're planning on filling up is closed for some reason (not uncommon for that area) you need to know if you can make it to the next town which can be a ways.
