I have a 1978 F-150 Custom 4x4, and I live in Miami, FL. The truck was rusty around the cab drip rails and along the top of the windshield. Driving down the interstate with the wind-wings open and the windows closed, I guess the pressure built up inside the cab and bam, there goes the roof! So now I need a new roof, but I cant find one. I talked to my body shop, and they said they could put a new roof on if I found a donor roof that was cut off the cab a little bit down at the four pillars. Anyone know of a salvage yard that might have one that I could get shipped to me? All the potential donor trucks I have found down here also have rust in the same spots, so I think I need to expand my search.
They do exist. There is a yard in Texas that specializes in exactly this thing for old Ford trucks. I can't remember their name, but maybe that will help direct your search. Before I did my windshield frame repair, I called them to ask if they could cut out a piece of windshield frame and send it to me. They said they would only be able to send me the entire roof, so I know they can do that for you.
No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any NOS and AFAIK, it's not reproduced.
Ford spot welded the drip rails to the roof, then used flexible paintable caulk to fill in the gaps.
The caulk hardens, begins to chip off, water seeps in, rust begins, soon spreads into the roof. This is a common problem on all FoMoCo vehicles with drip rails.
Hey I have a couple parts-trucks with a good roof, and could cut one off and ship it to you. Shoot me a visitors message with your email address and I can send pics.
Has anyone actually built a dent side roadster pickup? This may be an opportunity to create the ultimate Miami cruiser for Collins Avenue, The Design District, Biscayne Blvd Ocean Drive and the Lincoln Road Mall.
Custom removable top, like a Jeep. Could probably build a fairly cheap soft top for it if you did it yourself. Run a strip of those button snaps, idk whay they're called, around the edges then make a canvas top. Maybe talk to an upholsterer. Kinda like this. You could do just the roof if the rest of the cab is ok.
Then, too, there is the Carson Top concept from the world of custom cars dating back to the late thirties.
More recently, it has become possible to buy removable hard fiberglass tops to replace the soft fabric of a convertible.
So, lots of options for the adventurous soul with a few extra bucks to spend.
