Just picked up an '86 F-350 as a first diesel to learn on and play around with. The truck wasn't driven much, only 140k from the original owner. However, it was driven as a daily driver by the previous owner in year before I bought it, so naturally things have started to fail.
What I'm dealing with now is this - there is a leak around the passenger-side drum brake. I thought it was the wheel cylinder at first when I was checking the truck out, but it smells strongly of grease/axle lube. The previous owner also stated that you can feel like something is dragging in the rear end, holding the truck back above like 20 mph. I'm planning on replacing the axle seals and pulling the cover off the diff to inspect and refill, but just wanted to fish for opinions or advice about what to look for.
stuck. That will cause the brakes to drag, and overheat , and then the rubber seal melts and axle grease coats the inside of the drum.
I have done it twice.
Good luck with your truck!
I'll have to check that out, but I'm not sure that's the issue because the p-brake actually barely holds the truck on a hill. I was actually going to take a look at the adjuster/shoes while I had the wheels off.
Almost every time time I've seen an axle leak is because the diff breather line is plugged, be it the hose or the fitting that screws into the axle. Make sure to get the updated 2 piece seal as they seal way better.
