I'm new at this site and this probably has been asked before, but here goes. Can a 5 spd transmission for a 89 ford pick (running behind a 300 6cyl) be mounted to a straight 6 in a 66. If so, anyone with a brief description of the process would be greatly appriecated. Thanks in advance.
I think you'll need to use bellhousing & all. 89 5spd is Metric, uses a hydraulic release system, which 66 doesn't have. Your 66 SAE spec'd clutch release mechanism will not work on 88-96, 5 spd O/D manual tranny. That's just for starters.
Next, Mazda built,, 5 spd Manual Trans, 88 - 96 is biggest hunk of [expeletive deleted] I've ever owned. they eat bearings, make noise, are ridiculously expensive to repair, are hard to shift when cold or been sitting a few hours.
They use a wierd setup at shifter boss to seal it. You'll need to get either a piece of 88-96 trans tunnel to adapt 66, or leave a gaping hole in your floor, w/ 5spd cover & shifter boss sticking up into your hot, loud, unpleasant cab. . . .
I made the mistake of buying a 4.9L I-6 w/ 5spd O/D Manual. First chance I get it's outta there. Probably engine & all too!
