Texas. I live north of Dallas . Traffic sucks with 8+ million folks in Dallas- Ft worth, but lots of folks live outside of the mess and commute in.
Low state sales tax, TON of work to be had and one of the fastest growing economies in the country. No state income tax. 3 cities in Texas are the fastest growing in the US by Forbes. Areas that are North of Austin, North of Houston and North of Dallas .

Hello again, thank you for the responses. The Carolina's were in the lead when I first made up my mind to leave, but don't they still get ice from time to time and hurricanes? Then my brother suggested I look farther west. The more I looked the better that idea.I'm a drag racer so that could be year round, motorcycles, national parks and I want to go to Bonneville ,ect.......
I work for myself for now,(welding, classic car parts),but it won't raise a family or support my racing habit, really that's all I want. Here's the truck, their are pics on other threads ,but here are more and a pick of the wheelstander that the Ford was built to tow.
Chris

If you don't like earthquakes, you don't want to live in AK, CA, OR & WA .. You may not want to live in MO either.
A HUGE earthquake occurred in Madrid MO in 1804. There was no Richter scale back then, but this quake changed the course of several rivers, hills and mountains moved. When will the next occur?
Earthquakes 'show up' unannounced, they're usually over within 10 seconds.
Meanwhile, while you have advanced warnings of approaching hurricanes, their directions can change, so who knows where they will go.
Food stuffs and water sell out quickly in stores, the roads soon become clogged with traffic. I'd rather experience an earthquake (and have!) then worrying about a hurricane.
Tornados can occur anywhere. The Weather Channel recently showed a film of a huge tornado that occurred in Tuscaloosa AL
Like TX, NV has no state income tax, but where will you live? Reno is somewhat close to Bonneville, but it's hotter than hell during the summer, it can snow during the winter.
TX is no panacea either. Along the gulf coast, it's sooo humid during the summer, that I wonder why anyone would want live there.

Well, in Pa summers are hot and humid with dew points 60s and 70s temps go into the 90s. On the other end in Jan and Feb temps can go into singles or sub zero, and steel eating salt and brine on ALL of the roads which are crap to begin with all year.A 100 degree temp swing is insane and I am sick of it,the salt eats everything.
Most all of the small towns around me are dead or on their way.Coal, rail, and Bethlem steel built northeast PA,but now it is all gone.School districts trying to tax their way out of holes, with a tax base that is gone and people who just can't pay for it.
It's looking more and more like somewhere in Texas is a good place start.I live in the country now,and I like rural living , outside of metro areas is where I should really start to look?
Chris
I hate Phoenix, but the rest of Arizona is awesome!
Outside of Phoenix, there are no smog/safety inspections. I didn't even take the out-of-state vehicles into the DMV-just carried in the old plates and title. Done!
The southwest gets a bit warm in the summertime, but winters are mild.
Acreage isn't too expensive, and zoning is rather lax. Build whatever you want on two, five, ten or twenty (or more) acres

Hello I thought they smog test back to 67 if you have no classic plates and insurance,or does that just apply to say the counties where Phoenix, and other big metro areas are?

Only vehicles who live in, or commute into, Maricopa County (Phoenix) are subject to emissions testing.
Our trucks qualify for "Historic Vehicle" plates. That means they're over 25 years old and we can pay an additional $10/year for the awesome and cool copper plate.
They don't count as classic or antique vehicles for either titling or insurance purposes.
Look around Arizona. I would say anywhere except Yuma. You said "No Snow". That could include Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Payson, Tucson, and lots of others. If you could stand around 6"-1' of snow per year, you could handle Prescott or Chino Valley. Great thing about that area is its very central -- 2 to 4 hours drive to whatever you could think of. Any of those places has no emissions. Stay away from Flagstaff... cold and high cost of living.

Hello, thanks for the reply.I am really looking never to hear the words "Nor"and "Easter" ever again and to have no reason to own anything four wheel drive. I will have to start to check out those places you mentioned. I really want to visit potential places first.
I'm already looking to by a trailer to make the move since I need one for the wheelstander anyway.
Chris
For what its worth, I live in Prescott. I drive a '74 F-250 Crewcab. I have put it in 4wd 3 times in 3 years. I did get stuck in my driveway once, but just locked the hubs and drove away. Most people don't try to drive when it snows here, but I'm from Alaska and very much enjoy the snow days. I moved to this town without ever actually setting foot in it and believe I made a great choice. I would estimate that you could comfortably drive a convertible 300 days a year.
Check out city-data .com for great advice on moving cities. Tells you everything from demographics to crime rates to schools to cost of living plus has a great forum.
