tranny interchange

i have an 86 ranger that the A4LD quit in. i have a tranny from a 90 ranger with the A4LD both are 2.9L models but im told they wont interchange i need to know why as winter coming and getting to cold to walk to work and with a newborn i need it running

The 90 A4LD has the dual solenoids torque converter lockup and 3/4 solenoid. The 86 has only one. If you swap the 90 tranny you must swap the pcm and wire harness to the tranny.
