i hope i could get some answers in this forum. i have a 2003 explorer 4.0ltr and installed an aftermarket cold air intake, but the computer just don't want to adjust to the free flow intake. at idle the rpm goes up and down (stalls) and sometimes dies out, but whenever i install the stock airbox everything is fine. i tried numerous times disconnecting the battery, but with no change. . i know about the iac and i even cleaned the maf, but everything is fine when the stock box is put on. please advise!

no, it doesnt' get any better when the engine warms up. the only time it gets better is when i put the stock air box back. so i know there is nothing wrong with the iac or the maf, it's just that the ecu doesn't like more air. what should i do, i love the extra power the cai puts out. do i need to bring it to the dealer to reprogram the ecu? please help!

Almost sounds like some connection isn't being made with the CAI set up installed? Are you sure all hoses and the MAF are connected properly? You've probably already checked a bunch of times, but it just doesn't sound right if all you doing is increasing air intake.

the only other thing that I can think of is without resistance in the intake, you are getting backpressure waves from the intake valves closing. That would cause havac with the MAF. This is just an educated guess, but a free-flow exhaust would help the burnt air/fuel mixture escape the cylinder and stop any backpressure problems. Does anyone else have a suggestion on this?

Ford computers are adaptive. Disconnect the battery and then turn on the light switch with 15 minutes to reset the computer. Reconnect the battery. Give it time to relearn the idle, up to 100 miles and a couple of key cycles.
