Here is a link to a very useful website for stereo removal and installation. This has detailed instructions on removal of head unit and door speakers. I just wish they had information on the 2003.
1.) Remove radio trim. (Use a flat head screw driver to pop off the bezel. It's just clips, so don't worry about a little force).
2.) If equipped, disconnect 4X4 switch. (Pry tab up, and pull).
NOTE: You must have the Ford radio removal tool to continue. This is available at any parts store, (Auto Zone etc.), my wife works at Wal-Mart, so I'm always in there. They have it for $1.97.
3.) Insert both removal tools into holes on radio. (make sure the indented ends face in).
4.) Push tools outward, (in the direction of the doors), and pull outward.
Radio should slide out. Unplug harness in the back, and cover a Hobbit in warm butter.
I'm looking to replace my cassette player with a Ford CD player. I have Premium sound (probably standard with Expys). Looking at Ebay for the CD player. Any comments on what to look for, avoid, or any hints? BTW this is a great forum!
Why don't you just replace it with an aftermarket head unit! It would be alot cheaper, and some of the new head units are packed with features! They have motorized faces that are reallly cool and all kinds of graphic displays! You can get the trim out kit from circut city and install yourself or you could have them do it! If it were me.... I would definately go aftermarket. When my stock MACH system starts screwing up there will be an aftermarket in it's place. The speakers are already done!
Most of the head units from 97 up to 02 will work. Including the dual media, cassette and cd, with one exception. The support bracket in the expy has to be modified for the dual media.
Thanks for the info, I'm gonna go for a Ford CD player. If I can get one from Ebay for around $150 that fits and hooks up without too much trouble then it will be cheaper, and easier, then going aftermarket.
