The pipe is made from plastic, including the part that connects to the metal throttle body which has wide temperature swings. That weakens the plastic over time until it ruptures from the turbo boost pressure. We've seen ruptures from a low as upper 20K miles and up. Folks who tow or drive hard with tunes are probably more susceptible.
Replacements are made by Mishimoto, H&S, AFE and Rudy's Diesel (on Amazon). H&S has two versions, one of which eliminates the throttle body blade and requires a tune to compensate. I've heard the AFE has loose couplings and may leak.
I just installed the Mishimoto kit today.
The old one does not look bad, but I didn't want to be on the side of the road with my 5th wheel and that's when it would most likely happen. Here's the one I took off.
I won't tow again until the end of the month, but I'll be more confident in my towing machine!
I recently had the 60,000 mile service performed on my 6.7. I specifically asked the service manager if replacing the cold side intercooler pipe would affect my warranty. His reply was "as long as you use one that takes the factory MAF and it does not require you to mess with the "computer" it won't be a problem". I took the "computer" to be a re-tune. If you search for these things you'll see that some require a re-tune
The Mishimoto does come with spring clip and o-ring that have to be re-used from the OEM on the other kits. I got the Rudy's Diesel based on price. No regrets and it looks exactly like the Mishi from the photos.
I also got the Rudy based on price. Reusing the spring clip and O ring seal was no issue. Relatively easy to install, just don't forget to lube the tubes with Windex prior to assembly.
The only one that has had any reported problems after the install is the AFE. And its problem is allowing a little oil vapor blow by the fitting at the throttle body. Otherwise, they have been good too. I have the H&S as when it happened to me there were only the H&S and AFE readily available. I would probably go with the Mishimoto if I were doing it again purely on cost.
Eddie - suggest you visit the Mishimoto site, I believe their kit now comes with the O-Ring and spring-clip. I've also heard that Rudy's requires some fiddling / relocating of the res. which those who have used it say is no big deal. While the Mishimoto is quite a bit more expensive than Rudy's I'm not a fan of relocating stuff and plan on going with the Mishimoto once I can shake $350.00 loose. Here's a good thread on the intercooler replacement --> https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...oler-tube.html

The reports I've heard say that there is no need to move anything with the Rudy's kit.

I installed the Rudy's and didn't have to relocate anything, just twist intercooler section until it points past the reservoir. The photos of the two look identical to me except for the branding on the boots.
I did have to relocate the power steering reservoir about 1.5". Just for the naysayers, it hasn't moved now in 4k miles. It really is a non-issue. Here is a link for the H&S. Now $329..Better than when I bought it.
